History

FAPAP Highlights

Name Change: In 1997, the mission of the Florida Association of Public Art Administrators served administrators of public art programs and agencies in the State of Florida. To be more inclusive and encourage greater participation, the Board of Directors in 2010 voted to expand its mission and change the name of the organization to the Florida Association of Public Art Professionals to serve all who are engaged in the expanding field of public art, including artists, conservators, architects, and land planners.

Educational Programs/Outreach: As an ongoing benefit of FAPAP membership, scholarships were first offered in 2011. The Google Group was formed in 2016; FAPAP’s News Briefs began in 2010; the Facebook Page was launched in 2011; and informative, quarterly professional development Webinars are offered when in-person conferences are not held. Occasional Regional Artists’ Development Series have been held to expand outreach in underserved regions of the State.

Annual Conferences: 2008 – Current
To further the mission of FAPAP and connect with public art colleagues around the state of Florida, annual conferences were held, generally for three days in May and hosted by different cities, to showcase that region’s unique cultural diversity and its public art collections. The Year-in-Review highlights recently completed public art projects from around the state. Key conference speakers included Americans for the Arts leaders Patricia Walsh, Liesel Fenner, Clay Lord as well as Renee Piechoki, Barbara Goldstein, and artist Buster Simpson, who presented at Harn Museum of Art in 2006.  Due to Covid-19 pandemic, both the 2021 and 2020 FAPAP conferences, scheduled to be held in Sarasota, were postponed. Sarasota has agreed to host the conference in 2022, with the theme: Intersections: The Union of Public Art & People.
