Advocacy
Anyone can Advocate and make a difference. Grassroots advocacy is vital for continued success in the Arts. Advocacy is essential and is all about building a relationship with your elected official. You should provide them with information on the issues that matter most to you, and let them know about the good work the arts are doing in their district. The most effective advocates are able to concisely make the case for support of the arts.
How can you advocate for the arts?
- You should stay informed on current policy issues and funding.
- You can provide information to your elected officials on how arts impact your community. The arts have a dramatic impact on quality of life for all.
- Know your elected officials. You should meet them before you need them. You should be familiar with their staff and they should be invited to events, programs, etc.
- Contact your elected officials on a regular basis. Don’t wait until you need them to get to know them. This is a year-round activity – not just during Legislative Session.
There are many arts and cultural groups that provide advocacy both statewide and nationally. There are other organizations that provide resources. See below for a list of those sources available.
